There are many uses for lasers in Dentistry depending on the wavelength. Laser light is light energy which is absorbed by specific materials such as tooth structure and gum tissue. Our Erbium Laser is excellent for tooth preparation for fillings. When combined with a water spray, the Erbium light energy conservatively removes decay and compromised tooth structure without generating friction heat, the principal cause of pain associated with the dental drill. No drills, no heat, no need for anesthetic shots! The Erbium laser allows for more precise treatments preserving more of your precious tooth structure. There is some slight sensation due to the water spray and light energy but the majority of patients find the process far superior to the traditional “business as usual” form of dental treatment. Unfortunately, not all procedures can be performed using the Dental laser since old silver fillings cannot be removed by laser treatment, however, new restorations and replacement of tooth colored restorations can be done easily and comfortably. No more annoying numbness when you leave the office!
The Diagnodent diagnostic laser is a true advancement in the early detection of decay. By fluorescing the tooth with laser light, then reading the reflection, the Diagnodent detects even trace areas of decay. This allows earlier and more conservative treatment of decay while cavities are still small. When combined with dental x-rays, transillumination, and visual examination, a more thorough and complete examination can be performed.
The third laser treatment we offer is our Nd:YAG (say “N” “D” YAG). This wavelength is specific for gum treatments. Periodontal disease is the silent disease of dentistry and many of us don’t even realize that we have a progressing disease occurring in our mouths. When periodontal treatment is recommended, combining the Nd:YAG laser with conventional treatments can very often reduce healing time, improve results and sometimes eliminate the need for advanced treatment such as periodontal surgery. Nice to know it is available but you hope you never have to have it!
I hope this explanation of our available Laser treatments has proven interesting to you. Our providing of these treatments reflects our commitment to providing you with state-of-the-art services and therapies. I look forward to being your partner in dental health!
